Medigap Plans

Every Medigap policy must include certain benefits, allowing you to compare and contrast them more simply. In the majority of instances, Medigap insurance firms may only sell you a standard Medigap policy.

Although insurance firms which sell Medigap policies are not required to carry each Medigap policy (Medigap Policies A through N), they are required to sell you Medigap Plan A if they do carry any additional Medigap policies. From June 1, 2010, they are required to offer you Either Plan F or Plan C, if they carry any other forms of the policy. Though various state regulations may impact which policies they sell, every insurance firm determines what Medigap policies it wishes to offer.

In a few scenarios, even people with previously existing conditions must be able to buy a Medigap policy from a given insurance company. Below are listed various points at which you are guaranteed the right to purchase a Medigap policy, as follows:

  • If you have the right to a guaranteed issue.
  • If you are in the Medigap open enrollment season.

You also have the right to purchase Medigap insurance policies at alternate times, and yet the insurance firm has the right to deny you a Medigap insurance policy as a result of your health conditions. Furthermore, it could prove to be against the law for the insurance company to offer you a Medigap policy (for example, if you currently possess a Medicare Advantage Plan or Medicaid).
